Knitting Colours

Every now and then we meet up with creative  friends, and spent a Saturday together.

We met last weekend, where I learned to knit a French Lily- pattern. It was not all that easy - counting the loops and being very attentive - but it was not impossible either. I might knit a pillow to our couch with this pattern - if a suitable recipe will be found (I do not trust my own ability to make a recipe with this design yet!)

As I came home, I noticed how the orange yarn matched in colour the Easter flowers ... and I snapped a series of photos - changing the point of focus:

There's great value to knitting or
digging up your garden or
chopping up vegetables for soup,
because you're taking some time away
from turning the pages,
answering your emails,
talking to people on the phone,
and you're letting your brain process
whatever is stuck up in there.

Knitting Grey

Moments with knitting are a form of wellness for me ... I found this grey woolen yarn and a recipe for a poncho some weeks ago, and this afternoon was calling for some knitting. Knitting with needles number 8 is nice - it enables you to get some visible results within a short time.

I have a confession to make - I grew tired knitting a cardigan with needles number 2 ... So I did set that project aside for a while, and have picked up this poncho instead.

Including myself in the photos more often is something I'm trying to remember - so as the light was fine this afternoon, I did set up the tripod and used the auto shutter. Setting the focus right took some trial and error ... I did get my daily motion for sure, jumping back and forth when adjusting the settings!

... Wishing you a peaceful weekend,

Nina

Highlights of my week

The tube scarf has been in the making a few months now - it is so cozy to knit in the evenings. I like these soft colors, the woolen yarn and the recipe for the scarf is a present from a friend of mine from her travels.

Cherishing the moments in the kitchen, as our boys are making sandwiches or helping around, like emptying the dish washer ... The saying "Kitchen is the heart of a home" makes sense with the pulsing life it contains.

I was about to catch a common cold with sore throat, headache, running nose ... I drank pots of green tea with thinly sliced fresh ginger and honey, and slept a lot after work - I cannot say which helped most - I'm grateful for not getting really sick.

Glaze and Brushstroke apps, and a texture Tableaux Old Style from French Kiss Studio Textures

We had the pleasure of having the sun peeking out Friday afternoon - Sunlight does make a great difference after a foggy and rainy week. The bluish and turquoise shades and the glimpses of sunlight playing on the water ... Yes, the time seemed to stand still, as we admired the vast sea, the far horizon and the open sky.

The scent of paper and Earl Grey ... Simple pleasures on Saturday mornings.

... Is there a moment from this week that is still lingering in the back of your mind - what made it so special to you?

Wishing you a peaceful weekend,

Nina

Woolen dreams

Textures Mixed by Kim Klassen & Coffee Creak by Nancy Clayes

Only a few rows and my woolen tube scarf is ready ... This knitwork has been lying in the bottom of my yarn basket since April, so I picked it up again this weekend.

Mornings are getting cold - a cotton scarf is not warm enough anymore. I look forward of wearing this tube scarf: The  deep blue yarn is a blend of wool and silk, and the light yarn is mohair... making the scarf both  soft and airy.

I knitted two of these as Christmas presents last winter, they're easy and rather fast to knit. Maybe an inspiration for you to a homemade present?

Water for tea is boiling, and my knitwork is waiting...

Until next time,

Nina

World Wide Knit in Public Day in Vanløse, Copenhagen

The highlight of my Saturday was a creative World Wide Knit in Public- arrangement  in Vanløse Culture Center in Copenhagen. We were a bunch of ladies who came together to knit in the afternoon (where are all the men who knit - I know there are some talents out there?!).

Christina, a lovely lady, is running a project "Warmth to Homeless". Warmth to Homeless is about helping our fellowmen and -women, who due to different circumstances are homeless, trafficed or in the prostitution at the moment. Christina has gathered a group of knitting enthusiasts, who meet together to knit  socks, hats, mittens, neck warmers, wrist warmers to our fellowmen and -women in need.

Christine has made a Facebook Group Varm en Hjemløs (Warmth to Homeless). An easy way to support her cause is to "like" her Facebook Group and thereby help spreading the message.

Many of us are knitting a lot at home as well. When meeting together, Christine is colleting all the knitted items together, whereafter she will be handing them over e.g. to Reden International, a non governmental organization working with trafficed women in Copenhagen.

Our World Wide Knit in Public - Warmth to Homeless - afternoon in Vanløse was not only  about knitting in good fellowship, but also enjoying live music by Julie Michelsen, whose beautiful voice and guitar made our afternoon festive!

Julie's music and songs are poetic in a smooth, playful and serene way. Her thoughtful lyrics makes you wander across time and space - ruminating about life, living and love in a serene way.

It is cozy to knit and chat together, enjoy a cuppa and listen to Julie's soft voice and her quitar play!

Linda's knitwork above is going to be a pair of wrist warmers - soft wool with decorative flowers and leaves.

I admire her talent - amongst other gorgeous things, she has knitted a sweet pair of flower earrings.

January by Julie Michelsen

Julie Michelsen's January is a peaceful and dreamy melody. I'm fond of her music video, where you can see and hear a bit from her cute toddler. You'll also get a glimpse of the grey and wet January weather in Denmark ... That's maybe one reason why the Danish hygge (coziness) - a get together with candles, something good to eat and drink, is an important part of the survival kit during the wet and windy  wintertime.

I am knitting a green mufler - already halfway through :-)

Thank you Christine for arranging
the World Wide Knitting Day in Vanløse,
together with Linda and Julia Micheelsen -
You ladies are getting people engaged into an important work,
that is making a difference!

Reversible bags & rice bags DIY

When our children were small, I often sewed clothes and nice little things to them. Now Christmas is serving as a great occasion to find my sewing machine and get a bit creative!

I have been sewing to the small relatives - as the toddlers do not read my blog, I dare to show a few pictures here before Christmas :)

This bag of rice is 12 years old - it keeps appearing from the most odd places - I found it from the hood of our younger son a month ago!  When our oldest son learned to walk, I sewed him little rice bags with handles - that was the most used gift that Christmas! The rice bags went wherever he went - it was an easy thing to carry - it didn't tip his balance at all :)

So as this old rice back was found, I got inspired to sew a few ordinary rice bags with handles, to the little relatives that are about to learn to walk.

These rice bags contain a white cotton cloth bag which is approximately half filled with rice. After I put the white cotton rice back in to the coloured back, I set a ribbon to serve as a handle, and sewed the bag together from the top.

To the school girl I sewed a reversible bag - she can turn the bag either to pink- flowery bag or to the dog-patterned bag. I used a pocket from my old jeans to serve as a little pocket.

The other sweet niece is going to receive a pink - green reversible bag. I sewed a fish ribbon to brighten up the side of the bag. I'm going to put some the colored pencils and paper inside her bag.

The 3 -y. old little man gets a reversible bag as well. This back has a wide shoulder straps, so that he can carry all the little cars!

I'm almost ready with the knitted presents as well. Using double yarn and large needles, you can easily knit a scarf or two to Christmas.

This fluffy scarf is almost ready. It is knitted with 8 mm circular needles, using two different colored mohair yarn.

The fabrics for the reversible bags and rice bags was something I all ready had - I needed to purchase only the spotted ribbons. Sewing is fun, I should maybe arrange a monthly sewing afternoon and invite a couple of friends over ... I could actually sew a large tote to my library book ...

Knitting Inspiration

A quiet moment in the library

I've been longing for the cozy, dark autumn evenings, to take my yarns, knitting needles and crocket hooks out. This afternoon I found some inspiration to nice, comfy knits and a lovely floor pillow.

A snapshot of a page in the Alt om HĂĄndarbejdes Strikke Magasin 08/2012.

The plush and hefty floor pillow is knitted with thick "spaghetti-yarn".

Wearing this red sweater would probably make me feel energetic throughout the day!
It seems though a bit challenging to knit the shoulder and neck region of the sweater.

I like the earthy colors and charming crocheted pocket of this gardigan.
