Create a Sense of Depth with Photo Veils {Photo Recipe}

The weather has been warm here in April. The delicate scent of the blossoming flowers and the sound of buzzing flies and bees fills the air ...  I enjoy the photo walks in the spring time!

I had my point-and-shoot camera with me this time. I was taking a close-up picture of this pretty thisle, as a fly landed on it - Voila! The fly was hovering above the thisle quite some time, so I took a few more shots.

I wanted to get a picture with a clear subject in the middle, against a blurred background, to use it in creating a feeling of depth to the photo by using photo veils.

Photo recipe:
  • I increased the contrast of the original image to start with.
  • Thereafter I added the following 2 photo veils:
    • Bells of Ireland from the Botanical Collection, blending mode soft light with 75 % opacity. I used a soft round brush with 40 % opacity to remove some of the veil from the Thisle flower and from the fly.
    • Medium from the Illumination Collection, blending mode soft light with 100 % opacity.

- Simple as that! The Photo Veils give a natural effect, creating a sense of depth to your images. I my opinion photo veils from the Botanical Collection are perfect for nature and flower photography - They blend softly to your photos, giving a delicate finishing touch.

God's Love

I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead,
angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow,
high or low, thinkable or unthinkable
—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love
because of the way that
Jesus our Master has embraced us.

Earth Day 2014 - Green Cities: Copenhagen

As I walked by the lake in the late afternoon, this pretty spring flower stood under a bush ... being pure and simple - having popped up from earth just a few days ago. "Simple" in this weeks theme in Kim Klassen's Texture Tuesday.

I used Kim Klassen's textures Framed with blending mode luminosity 11% and 2811Magic with blending mode screen 9%. I added also a photo veil Pohutukawa from Love That Shot's
Botanical Collection.

Earth Day in 2014 focuses on Green Cities. Living in the suburbs of Copenhagen, I enjoy the parks and small lakes around and about. The three lakes close by form a peaceful area with rich bird life - I often times see people with binoculars spotting the different waterbirds.

Bicycle lanes is another green initiative I cherish here in Copenhagen. The neatly connected bicycle lanes and routes are one reason why so many people bike to work and schools. The lates initiative is the "Super-bike-lanes" that are specially designed to fit the green wave in traffic lights, making it fast and easy for you to bike longer distances in the mornings and evenings.

Biking to the university and to work was a great way of being outside and getting motion. Now it would take me over an hour to bike to work, and another hour to bike home, so I often drive car or take the bike & train-combination. The local trains have special sections, where you can take your bike with you.

The video below shows both different types of bikes & biking in the city. The "Christiania bike" enables you to transport small children in the bike. When our boys were small, we had a small bike-trailer behind one of our bikes, where our boys were sitting. It had a cover for a rainy day, with small windows, they could look ouside.

... Wishing you a Happy Earth Day from Copenhagen!

He is risen

The angel spoke to the women:
“There is nothing to fear here.
I know you’re looking for Jesus,
the One they nailed to the cross.
He is not here. He was raised, just as he said.
Come and look at the place where he was placed."

Vintage Black and White Photo Effect with Photo Veils - Photo recipe

We have an old box filled with faded black and white photographs from my husbands grandparents. Every now and then we look at the photos together with his sisters ... I enjoy hearing their childhood memories, as well as admiring the time's warm patina on the photos.

I wanted to create a vintage-like black and white photo effect using Photo Veil Collections from Love That Shot.
In order to let the light fall on the tulips alone, I chose a dark backdrop - actually a blanket of cashmere and alpaca - that would not reflect light. The texture of the blanket would create fine a contrast to texture of the tulip petals.

My focus was on the lowest tulip, so I used spot metering. The daylight light fell on the tulips from the window to the left, creating natural highlights and shadows.

Photo recipe:
  • I converted the photo to black and white in Lightroom, using the B&W Contrast High-present. Therafter I increased slightly the highlights and shadows.
  • I added the following 4 photo veils:

Photo veils create subtle and seamless layers, enabling you to achieve the effect, that suits to your style of photography.

... Until next time,

Nina

Living Water

On the last day, the biggest day of the festival,
Jesus stood again and spoke aloud.

Jesus: If any of you is thirsty, come to Me and drink.
If you believe in Me, the Hebrew Scriptures say that
rivers of living water will flow from within you.
