On Books and Reading

“I cannot remember the books I’ve read any more than the meals I have eaten;
even so, they have made me.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The dark evenings are inviting us to grab a book and sit comfortably in the sofa ... I read a lot of work related literature about psychology, counselling, child develeopment and learning, but late in the evening I like to read different novels, poems and biographies. It is usually in the holidays, that I can go deep with a series of novels.

The long summerholidays in the countryside in my childhood were filled with outdoors activities and reading ... I remember reading the Five, Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, and all Tolkien's books during the warm summerdays. Since then, books and holidays has been a perfect match for me.

In the mornings I'm reading just one Psalm and a short devotional. I keep coming back to my favorite devotionals, which are Oswald Chambers's My Utmost for His Highest, Søren Kierkegaard's Purity of the Heart is to Will One Thing, Ann Voskamp's 1000 Gifts and Watchman Nee's The Normal Christian Life.

I've been reading  lately a few crime novels by a Norwegian writer Jo Nesbø, and I'm about to start reading a biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, called Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy.

For the Christmas holidays I've thought about diving into Karl Ove Knausgaard's selfbiographic series My Struggle. Knausgaard is a Norwegian author, who has written 6 autobiographical books.

I have a file, where I write the titles of the books, friends and colleques have recommended - It's nice to find the list, when going to library ...

Do you remember the favourite books from your childhood -
What are you reading at the moment?

Nina

  1. Love these images, so beautifully done. And I always love to know what other people are reading! I love children's books and am revisiting a lot with my daughter at the minute - Little House on the Prairie and pretty much all the End Blyton's! I am going back to one of my favourite reads - I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith - as I was looking for something comforting and familiar. I've just finished The Fault in Our Stars (loved it) and I'm also reading Brene Brown's Gifts of Imperfection (and doing her course). I must come back to see what you everyone else is reading. Happy day to you. :)

  3. Beautiful images, and I especially love the 2nd one! If I were given a grade for reading these days it would be an F. I haven't read much the past few years, but it's on my list of future things to enjoy.

  4. Hi Nina! As a child I loved Pippi Longstocking...what a girl without boundaries! She just said and did whatever she wanted. That was enormously fun. Now I read books that support my desire to get deeper into faith. I like Thomas Merton, and I have read several books by Joanne Weaver.

You have some very interesting books on your list. I have read Voskamp's book, and that one is very popular. Being thankful is so important. I love the idea of your recommended list. I should do that! Sometimes I run out of ideas for reading, and forget what titles people have suggested.

    Have a blessed day!

My favorite book as of late is the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society - I just loved it!!
I'm currently reading the Maisie Dobbs series.. I finished book #2 (Birds of a Feather) just yesterday. They are nice easy reads that take me away right into the story without much effort on my part, I enjoy the characters very much!

  16. Currently I am reading a mystery novel. The cold weather season really marks the beginning of my reading season. My children have a break from sports activities and thus a bit more reading time for me.

  17. Lovely images, so serene. You are just starting one of my favorite books of all time, the Bonhoeffer bio. So rich and inspiring. Right now I'm reading the 3rd of the Call the Midwife books, on which the TV series is based. They are so well written and fascinating. As a child I devoured all the Little House books. My grandkids are reading them now :)

  21. I have so many books downloaded to my Kindle to read. I too have always read, but more in the teen years I always had a book in hand to read. I find as I age, I do like the Kindle...easier on these aging hands to hold and turn the pages. I recently finished The Book Thief. It's a really good book, but I found it so sad to read because of the subject matter.I would recommend it though. Happy Tuesday ~ visiting from Texture Tuesday.

Really like how the texture and editing turned out on your photo; especially the lamp.

  22. My favorite books from my childhood were all the books by Astrid Lindgren with Pippi Longstocking being the absolute favorite. I also loved the books by Enid Blyton like The Famous Five and The O'Hara Twins. I just finished the Lord of the Rings trilogy which was a wonderful retreat from "real life". My favorite writers are Barbara Kingsolver, Laura Resau (she writes for teenagers, but it's wonderful to read when you're much older as well), I've read a lot by Jodi Picoult, but there are books by here that I don't care for very much. Most times I get my books from thrift stores - if I like them I keep them, if not or if I know that I will only read it once I donate them. There are several books that I read twice or more often, like my favourite "I heard the owl call my name" by Margaret Craven. I never get tired of it.
